Our client, a Further Education College specialising in land-based training, is looking to recruit a Functional Skills Tutor to contribute to the teaching, administration and assessment on the Communication, ICT & Application of Number courses.

About the College

Capel Manor College based in Greater London, is a Centre of Vocational Excellence for Horticulture, Landscaping and Garden Design, Floristry, Business Enterprise, Animal Care and Saddlery.

Description of duties

Reporting to the Head of Learning Support, main duties and responsibilities:

  • Contribution to teaching, administration and assessment of courses offered by the college (to include all centres in Greater London as appropriate).
  • Preparation of schemes of work, learning materials, assignments and associated student support schedules.
  • Preparation of reports and statistics as required to contribute to the college’s quality assurance process.
  • Participate in the development, organisation and delivery of new educational and curricular initiatives undertaken by the college as appropriate.
  • Participation in enrolment and advice sessions, parents’ evenings and student review meetings
  • Participate in internal and external verification procedures.
  • Undertake examination and invigilation duties.
  • Liaise as necessary with the appropriate course managers, tutors and learning support assistants concerning individual student progress and development.  Work with colleagues as a member of appropriate course teams.
  • Ensure student discipline in all academic situations and report as necessary to the appropriate course manager.
  • Mark student assignments and examinations.
  • Assist students in finding suitable employment.
  • Attend School, team, student progress and other meetings as directed, and on a regular basis, and produce reports as may be required.
  • Assist in promotions, open weekend activities and other exhibitions.
  • Undertake personal professional development.
  • Any other duties of a comparable nature as requested by college managers.

Experience / Qualifications

Successful candidates will need the following:

  • Knowledge of Communication, ICT and Numeracy at Entry Level 3, Levels 1 and 2
  • High level organisational and record-keeping skills
  • Familiarity with Information Learning Technology applications
  • Active interest in use of ILT to improve access to learning
  • Experience of working in an educational or training environment
  • Experience of teaching Key Skills/Functional Skills
  • Experience of working with learners with different learning needs.
  • Personal communication skills of a high order
  • Flexibility, responsiveness and commitment to the area of work
  • Skilled in liaison and negotiation with others
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Enthusiasm for working with young people
  • Enthusiasm for working with challenging learners and learners of all abilities
  • Demonstrable commitment to inclusive and comprehensive post-16 educational provision

It is desirable for candidates to have the following:

Relevant degree, or professional accreditation, HND or equivalent
Teaching qualification (completed or in progress)
Knowledge or experience of curriculum specialism’s offered within the college.
Experience of curriculum development in an educational or training environment
Experience of managing a pressurised and demanding role

Hours: Hours are 14.4 hrs per week (Monday and Tuesday) for 38 weeks per year
