The south’s premier Outdoor Centre, Calshot Activities Centre is one of the largest Outdoor Education Centres in Britain. We have a reputation for excellence and professionalism and operate to the highest safety standards. We offer residential and non-residential courses in an unrivalled number of exciting water and landbased activities. Situated in a unique position on the shores of the Solent, our magnificent setting gives immediate access to the country’s most popular watersports location. Ashore, historic hangars accommodate a state of the art climbing complex, the only indoor velodrome in southern England and a dry ski slope. The range of activities taught at the Centre includes canoeing, dinghy sailing, windsurfing, power boating, downhill skiing, snowboarding, rock climbing, track cycling, mountain biking, archery, orienteering, high ropes, Field Studies and development training.

You’ll be experienced, enthusiastic and motivated, and believe in the value of outdoor learning. With a broad experience of Outdoor Activities you’ll also have significant experience of working in a Centre. As an experienced water sports instructor, we would to expect you to already hold:

  • RYA Senior Instructor Dinghy
  • RYA Start Windsurf Instructor
  • RYA Safety Boat Award
  • BCU level 1 Coach

It is desirable for you to hold Instructional Awards in at least one of our Landsports together with knowledge of our other land based activities, particularly skiing, rock climbing, snowboarding or Field Studies.

We would also expect you to have a proven track record of managing small teams of staff, delivering staff training and the ability to work independently to tight deadlines.

Job purpose
To instruct Calshot’s full range of activities to customers. Also to be involved in staff training, Course Directing and Duty Manager roles, in order to support the outdoor centre management in day-to-day operations whilst observing health and safety principles and processes

Essential qualifications
  • RYA Senior Instructor Dinghy, Start Windsurf Instructor and Safety Boat Award
  • BCU UKCC level 1 Coach, or equivalent

Desirable Qualifications
  • Additional qualifications in other relevant activities
  • Relevant Degree (for example: Outdoor Education, Outdoor Education Management)
  • Full driving licence to include D1 (minibus)
  • First Aid Certificate

Essential knowledge, skills & experience
  • A broad experience of teaching young people and adults in Outdoor Activities, with significant experience in Centres
  • Proven ability to work independently to deadlines
  • Ability to work well in teams along with ability to lead and motivate teams
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to develop new resources – ICT skills, communication skills

Desirable knowledge, skills & experience
  • Experience of delivering staff training and development
  • Additional skills in relevant land or water based activities
  • Knowledge and understanding of Outdoor Education
